PROPERTY & SCALE
Royal Hawaiian Center, formerly Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, is the premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination in Waikiki. The 4-level Center spans a 3-block stretch of the famed Kalakaua Avenue and is currently being revitalized and expanded to more than 310,000 square feet of world-class shops, restaurants and entertainment.

Owned by Kamehameha Schools and developed and managed by The Festival Companies, the Center will soon feature 110 shops, 10 anchor restaurants, a world-class state-of-the-art live performance showroom and the largest open garden space in the heart of Waikiki. It remains open during its revitalization.

 

LOCATION
The Center is comprised of three main building structures that span approximately 1,200 linear feet along Kalakaua Avenue and 340 linear feet along Lewers Street. The open-air Center is situated on more than six acres of prime real estate in the heart of Waikiki at Helumoa, which was once home to Hawaii's royalty and more than 10,000 coconut palms, which are the inspiration for the revitalization. The Center is adjacent to the Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Waikiki Hotels.

 

PROJECT TIMELINE (Construction completion scheduled as follows)

  • The principle construction in Buildings A-C is complete.
  • The Royal Grove is complete.
  • Waikiki Nei will be completed in summer 2008.
  • Merchant build-outs will continue throughout the Center through summer 2008.

 

PROJECT COST
Kamehameha Schools has invested more than $115 million in the renovation. This is the first major renovation since the project initially opened in 1979.

 

RETAIL MIX
Royal Hawaiian Center houses the largest concentration of flagship stores in Hawai'i including Cartier, Hermès, Salvatore Ferragamo, Bvlgari, bebe, LeSportsac, Rolex Kaimana Kea, kate spade, Tourneau, Juicy Couture, and FENDI. The high-profile corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Lewers Street has been dubbed the "Rodeo Drive of Waikiki." Hilo Hattie’s 30,000 square foot flagship store will soon anchor the Diamond Head end of the property. From luxury goods to native Hawaiian artisans, shoppers will discover a vibrant mix of 110 local and specialty retailers throughout the property.

 

DINING
The 10 new anchor restaurants, several outdoor cafes, casual eateries and specialty food shops are integral to the experience at Royal Hawaiian Center. The Pa'ina Lanai will offer a casual family setting for guests to indulge their cravings through a variety of tasty treats for their eyes, noses and taste buds. The Pa'ina Lanai will host a fabulous mai tai bar overlooking The Royal Grove on the second level of Building B.

 

CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT
Royal Hawaiian Center returns to the traditions of Helumoa in Waikiki through Hawaiian story telling, dance and music in The Royal Grove. As one of the largest lush green spaces in Waikiki, The Royal Grove is a centerpiece for entertainment and cultural gatherings with local hula ha-lau and other exciting performance groups. For a hands-on experience, guests also enjoy free cultural classes including 'ukulele, hula, lei making and Hawaiian quilting are offered at the Center.

 

Guests will be dazzled by Waikiki Nei, the hottest new show in Hawai'i by local production icon Roy Tokujo and his partners, Realisations of Montreal. Combining state-of-the-art technology and acrobatics with tradition, guests will be swept away by this magical and touching interpretation of Waikiki from Hawaii’s last and beloved Queen Lili'uokalani to present day. Slated to open in summer 2008, the 760-seat theater also transforms into a nightclub and ultra lounge called LEVEL4 Nightclub & Ultra Lounge.

 

LANDSCAPE/ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

  • Elimination of the three heavy bridges replaced by a single, lighter footbridge on the third level provides a viewing destination of The Royal Grove.
  • New two-story retail stores with beautiful facades create new retail streetscape along Kala-kaua Avenue and Lewers Street.
  • Large-scale lanai and new window openings throughout the project open up restaurants to the street below.
  • New "makai entrance" facing the Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Waikiki Hotels, include a beautiful retail arcade to create a resort atmosphere.
  • Large, welcoming entryways have been revealed with the elimination of elevators that blocked arcades and views into the Center.
  • New elevators and escalators throughout the project create convenient customer flow throughout the Center.
  • Complete and dramatic transformation of the concrete courtyard into a lush garden. "The Royal Grove" is a 30,000 square foot ethno-botanically landscaped gathering area, abundantly planted with coconut palm trees with performance areas, cultural points of interest, seating and water features.
  • Wide flagstone sidewalks, shaded with lush tropical landscaping extends along Kala-kaua Avenue and all sides of the Center, including three central atriums.
  • Beautiful flagstone flooring, additional Hawaiian artwork, signage and graphics, improved lighting and other thematic elements.

SERVICES/SAFETY
A customer service desk with bilingual English/Japanese speaking concierges is available to assist guests. The Center houses the investigative unit of the Honolulu Police Department for the Waikiki area and also has top electronic surveillance and security personnel throughout the Center.

 

PARKING
Royal Hawaiian Center has the largest garage in Waikiki with 10 levels of parking and 614 stalls located adjacent to the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Guests will pay $2 for two hours of parking when validated by any retail merchant – a maximum of two separate validations provides a total of $4 for four hours. Dining guests will also enjoy $4 for four hours of parking when validated by any restaurant at Royal Hawaiian Center. No minimum purchase is required. After 10 p.m., guests can also enjoy a flat rate of only $5.
